History

A natural quality product with unique properties. The manual craftsmanship promises extreme stability and increases in value over time.

The hot stone in Hauser's restaurant does not originate from the Australian Outback; it comes from Valmalenco, a side valley in the Engadin near the Maloja Pass, towards Veltlin in the south. It is essentially a local – a green serpentine soapstone – that combines fun and warmth with culinary delights.

The Pass itself used to be in the hands of smugglers. Thankfully, this is no longer the case. You, dear Guests, have the chance to grill a wide variety of local and imported meat and fish at your own table. We have been offering this specialty in Hauser's restaurant at the heart of St. Moritz for more than 10 years.

Piöda hot stones have excellent heat conductivity and physical properties. They bring out the flavour of the grilled dishes beautifully. Piöda hot stones have two usable surfaces and are available in different variations.

The green serpentine has been promoted in Valmalenco for centuries. This exceptional stone plays a pivotal role in the social, cultural and commercial life of a valley that lives from ancient stone crafting and has accumulated and been home to a wealth of experience over the centuries. On top of all that, this stone is both beautiful and extremely durable. Many roofs are still intact after more than a century, which just goes to show why green serpentine is especially well suited for floor slabs and roof building.

Valmalenco Piöda has been produced in the traditional way for centuries. The precision and rhythm of the craftsmanship and the sounds that accompany the working of the stone are part of a timeless tradition in which natural beauty and originality combine to create a unique, high-quality product.

How does it work?

You order your Piöda and we'll bring it to your table along with your meat, side dishes and sauces. The stone needs to be lightly salted before grilling so that the meat does not stick to the stone. You can then place your meat on the stone and watch it sizzle. Finally, turn the meat over, finish grilling it and enjoy the wonderful flavour. An ideal meal for all ages!
